Why bids are lost before writing starts

Most lost bids are not lost on writing quality. They are lost earlier: a mandatory form missed, an amendment not folded into the response, evidence the firm turns out not to hold, or a requirement buried in an attachment nobody read closely. A structured bid/no-bid analysis exists to find those traps while there is still time to act on them — or to walk away cheaply, before days of bid effort are spent on a tender that was never winnable.

The five factors a real analysis weighs

The Bidwise scorecard — the same one used in the paid review — weighs five factors, and prints its assumptions on the deliverable:

  • Deadline feasibility. Is there actually time to produce a compliant, quality response before the closing date — in working days, not calendar hope?
  • Document completeness. Is the full document set present and read, or are parts missing or unreviewable?
  • Requirement clarity. Are the requirements extractable and unambiguous enough to respond to, or do they need clarification first?
  • Evidence readiness. Does the firm already hold the evidence each requirement demands, and what would closing the gaps take?
  • Amendment risk. How has the solicitation already changed, and how stable is the baseline the bid would be written against?

The result is decision support. It is not an eligibility conclusion, not a win probability, and never a guarantee — any tool or service that promises those is selling certainty it does not have.

Gates are not scores

One discipline matters more than any weighting: pass/fail disqualification gates are kept separate from scored evaluation factors throughout. Blending them is how firms talk themselves into unwinnable bids — a strong score on quality factors cannot rescue a bid that fails a mandatory gate, and the analysis has to say so in those terms.

Free first steps

Three free tools cover the first screen. The Tender Opportunity Fit Score gives a transparent, indicative 0–100 against your own capability facts — it does not read the tender documents. The Bid / No-Bid Calculator structures the gut-feel decision into recorded reasoning from your answers. Notice Preflight verifies the source and deadline against the official notice itself. Used together, they will kill the obvious no-bids. What they cannot do is read the solicitation for you.

When the decision deserves the documents read

The paid compliance matrix + bid/no-bid review ($149) performs the analysis on the approved document set itself: a source-linked requirement/evidence matrix, the amendment baseline, document-completeness observations, disqualification gates separated from scored factors, a missing-evidence and owner-action list, and the bid/no-bid scorecard with its assumptions printed on it — human-reviewed before delivery. The published scope is one solicitation, up to 60 extracted requirements, up to 50 source pages, up to 3 amendments and one written clarification round, delivered within two business days of completed intake; the full $149 is credited toward a full proposal package on the same tender when ordered within 14 days. Judge the format first in the sample output, and see how a review is built.
